August reset: simple routines before school starts

Hi Reader,

🎧 The First 7 Episodes Are Out

Before the back-to-school section — a real update this month, not just a behind-the-scenes peek.

Yesterday I sent the first 7 episodes of 30-Day Cantonese at Home to our founding members. 💛

I will be honest: these were not easy to make. We recorded, listened back, and recorded again. There was a lot of learning in it for me, and for my kids too. Some days the audio was fine and the words were not. Some days it was the other way around. But hearing my own children say these phrases back to me, in our own kitchen, is exactly why I started this.

Each episode is short. 3 to 5 minutes. Real home phrases, native Cantonese audio, no lesson planning, no pressure.

Day 1 is the simplest one in the whole program:

早晨
zou2 san4
Good morning

That is it. You say it before anything else, then you wait.

If you are a founding member: I sent you a separate email yesterday with your episodes and how to access them. Thank you for backing this before it existed. 🌸

If you are not a founding member yet: the full kit is still in progress. I am building the rest of the episodes now and planning to open the doors this fall. I will share the date here first.

Small moments add up. These are the first 7 of them.

August is here, and it always feels like a bridge between two seasons. ☀️📚

We are still enjoying summer days, late nights, outdoor fun, and family trips…

But in the back of our minds, we know school is coming soon.

New routines.
Earlier mornings.
Lunch packing.
Homework.
Activities.
And getting everyone out the door on time. 😅

The good news?

Back-to-school prep doesn’t need to feel overwhelming.

August is a great time for a gentle reset.

Not a strict schedule.

Not a huge family makeover.

Just small habits that help kids feel calm, confident, and ready.

This month, we’re focusing on:

  • Daily routines
  • Visual schedules
  • Responsibility
  • Learning spaces
  • And simple habits that support a smoother school year

🌿 August Reset: Build Calm Routines Before School Starts

If your summer routine has become a little loose, you’re not alone.

Later bedtimes, extra screen time, snacks everywhere, and kids asking “What are we doing today?” every 10 minutes.

That’s normal.

But before school starts, it helps to slowly bring back structure.

Here are helpful tools from Edkids Home to support your August reset:

But as a way to help kids feel capable.

Kids feel proud when they can help.

They also build confidence when they know they have an important role in the family.

🏡 Prepare a Calm Learning Space

Before school starts, it can help to look at your child’s learning space.

It doesn’t need to look fancy.

It just needs to feel calm, clear, and easy to use.

A small table, a basket of supplies, a quiet corner, or a simple homework station can make a big difference.

📚 Make Language a Daily Habit Again

August is also a good time to bring back small language habits before school gets busy.

You don’t need a long lesson.

You can start with 5 minutes a day.

Try:

🎧 A podcast during breakfast
🚗 Audio stories in the car
📺 A short video after lunch
📖 One book before bed
💬 One useful phrase each day

💛 Parent Tip of the Month: Start Before You Feel Ready

You don’t need to wait until the first day of school to start your reset.

Pick one small habit in August.

Just one.

Try:

  • Wake up 10 minutes earlier
  • Add a simple bedtime routine
  • Use a weekly planner
  • Set up a homework basket
  • Choose one chore
  • Play one audio story per day
  • Use one phrase at breakfast

Small habits are easier to keep.

And when kids know what to expect, they feel safer, calmer, and more confident.

Wishing you a calm, organized, and hopeful August,

Sincerely,

Ruby | Edkids Home
